#1: Graves Mountain
Calling all rockhounds! Did you know that Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia is one of the most famous dig sites for rocks and minerals such as hematite, quartzite, pyrite, rutile, and kyanite? As a matter of fact, at one time Graves Mountain produced half of the kyanite in the United States. Even though it’s now closed for commercial operations, rockhounds can still visit Graves Mountain.
Twice a year, usually the last weekend in April and first weekend in October, Graves Mountain hosts a Rock Swap and Dig, where rockhounds can visit to find amazing specimens. To get more info you can visit www.wncrocks.com to find out more about this Lincoln County “gem.”
#2: Georgia’s Freshwater Coast
After a busy day digging on Graves Mountain, you’ll need a place to relax and unwind. Lincoln County, also known as Georgia’ Freshwater Coast, has more than 1,200 miles of shoreline, which is perfect for fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. There are three secluded campgrounds here along this freshwater coast with RV hookups and primitive campsites for those that prefer to “rough it.” Broad River, Clay HIll, and Hester’s Ferry are these campgrounds located in Lincoln County on Clarks Hill-Strom Thurmond Lake which is the largest US Army Corps of Engineers lake east of the Mississippi River.
Elijah Clark State Park is also located on Clarks Hill-Strom Thurmond Lake in Lincoln County. This state park is named after a frontiersman and Georgia war hero who led pioneers during the Revolutionary War. In the park there is a log cabin replica of Clark’s home complete with furniture, utensils, and tools from around 1780. You can also view Elijah Clarks’ and his wife, Hannah’s, graves.
As with other state parks, there are many accommodations and facilities. Elijah Clark State Park offers 20 cottages, 172 tent, trailer, RV campsites, 1 pioneer campground, 3 picnic shelters, 2 group shelters, a sand beach, 4 boat ramps, miniature golf, canoe rental, and a playground. #3: Jeff & Sheri Easter’s Homecoming
Are you a fan of gospel music? If so, you would love to attend Jeff & Sheri’s Homecoming on Mother’s Day weekend each year. Jeff and Sheri Easter have been entertaining gospel audiences for many years as well as being featured on most of the Gaither Homecoming tours and videos. Both come from strong musical backgrounds. Jeff’s daddy is a member of the Easter Brothers and Sheri’s mom was a member of The Lewis Family from Lincoln County.
As a way to honor the musical heritage of The Lewis Family, who traveled and performed bluegrass gospel music for almost 60 years and is known as the First Family of Bluegrass Gospel Music, Jeff & Sheri decided to restore the old Lewis Family homeplace. They have done an amazing job restoring the house to the time period in which all of the Lewis children were living at home. The homeplace provides the beautiful setting for this Homecoming weekend. Some of the best names in gospel music take the stage here each Mother’s Day weekend. Visit www.jeffandsherieaster.com and make plans to attend this fun-filled, gospel music weekend.
